There are some afternoons that linger long after the last guest has gone home.

High Tea in Harlem was one of those occasions.

Hosted by the Antigua & Barbuda Progressive Society, this year's gathering brought together members, friends, neighbors, and guests for an afternoon celebrating Caribbean Heritage Month, Juneteenth, and the enduring power of community.

Guests arrived dressed in beautiful hats, setting the tone for an elegant afternoon filled with conversation, laughter, and fellowship. Over tea and island-inspired refreshments, old friends reunited, new friendships were formed, and stories were shared across generations.

One of the highlights of the afternoon was the unveiling of the Heritage Quilt, inspired by Symbol of Courage by Sir Keithlyn Smith and coordinated by the Friends of the Antigua Public Library – New York. The quilt beautifully reflected the history, resilience, and creativity of Antigua & Barbuda, inviting guests to pause, reflect, and celebrate our shared heritage.

Guests also enjoyed ProsperiTEA – A Sip of Wisdom by Grandma Mirie, a herbal tea inspired by generations of family tradition and Caribbean knowledge. It served as a fitting reminder that culture is preserved not only through books and art, but also through the everyday rituals that bring people together.

Throughout the afternoon, the true spirit of the event was evident—not simply in the tea that was served, but in the conversations that unfolded around each table. High Tea in Harlem reminded us that community is built one gathering, one story, and one shared experience at a time.
